As a family we have spent many weeks on holiday in Suffolk in our favourite destination of Minsmere. Because we love it so much it was a no brainer to make our visits more regular and now we are proud owners of Lodge94 ReVamp ReTreat. The area is so beautiful and full of nature, being part of the National Trust and RSPB, you never know when you may spot a rare species or bump into a few deer!
This is a blog to about 7 activities that are at the top of the list when we visit! We love taking walks along the beach and visiting various water holes for lunch, sometimes walking and taking our dog and sometimes on bike. Most of the places mentioned here are dog friendly.
1 – Tea , Cake and Fun for the Family
Walk or Cycle to The Coast Guard Cottages at RSPB Minsmere National Trust . The Coast Guard Cottages are roughly 20- 25 mins walk from Cliff House Holiday Park, they often have weekend events organised. But if there is nothing on the board when you arrive, no worries as this should keep your little ones busy! We loved the #50things Activity list 50 things to do before you’re 11¾ activity list | National Trust.
This book is a fantastic introduction for families to get out there and appreciate the nature we have around us! We should never take anything for granted! Lots to keep kids busy and when your done you can take the book away and carry on adding to it when you get home…stargazing to crawling through mud, building dens, looking for animal clues there is something in it for every young explorer. Wanting a snack? enjoy a cuppa and cake in tea room or sit and enjoy the view on benches from Coastguard Cottages Tea Room and Kiosk | National Trust
2 – Take A Walk Through Dunwich Wood
With many footpaths very well marked Minsmere is fabulous for walking , watching wildlife, soaking up some local history, or simply wandering around charming coastal towns, there’s plenty to keep everyone happy.
Take a walk through Dunwich Woods through wooded paths, this is a beautiful walk especially in the spring as there is plenty of wildlife and beautiful spring flowers. As you make your way along the footpath heading to Dunwich you pass the Old Friary with its impressive stone walls illustrate just what a huge building it was, definately worth a look.
3 – Take a cycle
One of the best ways to see Suffolk’s beautiful countryside is to hop on a bike. The roads here are relatively quiet compared to other places in the Uk and we found it perfect for young cyclists. With many pubs to eat out in, a cycle out can get you that bit further.
Haven’t got a bike? No Excuse! Velo Hire offer a wide range including E Bikes, multi-route explorer bikes which are our most popular & gives the benefit of both worlds of cycling (on & off road), mountain bikes , Dutch style ladies bikes and children’s bikes when hired with an adults bike. They also deliver and pick up at an agreed time/place for up to 4 bikes for £10 within a 10mile radius of Saxmundham.

4 – Have fun on the Beach!
We love good old fashioned beach life! and here on Dunwich Beach at the height of summer, you may be forgiven to think you are in Costa del Dunwich!
The steps from our Lodge at Cliff House take you directly to almost a private beach ( as you can only walk to it or use it whilst at Cliff House) So if its fishing, water sports, or beach barbecues we can give this beach 5*****!
5 – Stone Painting
Children never cease to amaze me! If you leave them to their own imagination they are so creative! Known for the Rock Stall at Cliff House, our son started a stall encouraging other children to choose a stone, either paint it themselves or have it painted for them! Kept them busy for hours, and of course there is no shortage of stones here. The perfect holiday keep sake.
It is said that hugging a tree increases levels of hormone oxytocin. This hormone is responsible for feeling calm and emotional bonding. When we hug a tree, the hormones serotonin and dopamine are released in our bodies making you feel happier. It was proven in a study in 2019 that spending two hours a week in nature is associated with the increase of our overall wellbeing. So what’s not to like! Put your tech down and get out in Natures Play ground!
7 – Foraging
When it comes to food foraging, where better to bring your basket than to Minsmere. Take advantage of ‘Natures Playground’ by walking through the Suffolk countryside at the right time of year. From berries, fish to mushrooms you’ve just got to open your eyes!
